Potential CUPE Strike Action Infortmation Update

Happy Hallowe’en Wings!

As you may be aware, contract negotiations between the Canadian Union of Public Employees – Ontario (CUPE) and the Ontario government have yet to produce an agreement. While we encourage both sides to come to a fair agreement, we do understand that the breakdown in talks could lead to a strike by CUPE as early as Friday, November 4.  As a result, the school board is currently planning for a switch to remote learning for our students, should that become necessary. We are currently identifying students who do not have home access to the necessary technology and would therefore require a device provided by the school.

Please complete this quick survey (https://lf.wcdsb.ca/forms/APC052-05F) to help us prepare for distribution of devices to families who require this assistance. Please complete this form as soon as possible, but no later than Wednesday, November 2nd at the end of the day.  Please only complete this form if you are in need of a Chromebook for your children, should we make a switch to remote learning.

Thank you in advanve for your patience as we work to ensure out students have the resources they need to continue learning during this uncertain time.

Hallowe’en Information – October 31st

On Monday, October 31, 2022 we will celebrate “Spirit Day.” All students and staff will be invited to wear their choice of orange and black clothing, Hallowe’en costume or “Autumn Spirit” wear. We ask that if you send your child dressed in a costume or Hallowe’en themed clothing, that you please ensure it is appropriate for school. This includes costumes that are non-violent in nature, modest and reflect our Catholic values. Students are also asked not to bring weapons or wear masks. We discourage ‘props’ as they tend to be easily lost and/or damaged thus resulting in tears and disappointment. Lastly, we also want to make sure that students can manage their own costumes – particularly for washroom breaks.

We also know that Hallowe’en is a time for treats! Please remember that it is not necessary to send in treats for students as we have many students with food allergies. If you would like to send something with your child, non-food items such as stickers, pencils, glow bracelets, etc. are preferred to share or hand out to friends. If you are wishing to bring in treats, they must be store-bought, wrapped, and all Nut FREE. Any homemade treats cannot be distributed to students and will be sent back home as we have many students with multiple food allergies. We appreciate your understanding.

Thanksgiving Blessings

Dear Families,

Wow! What a great start to the school year! September has come and gone, and we are very fortunate at Saint Gabriel to welcome many new faces to our wonderful school community. Miss Stevens and I are so very thankful for the warm welcome to Hespeler. We truly feel blessed to be here, working alongside all of you.

The students were excited to kick off a new school year, arriving ready to learn and take part in many of the special events and activities that have already begun!

It was lovely to see so many of you at our Meet the Teacher/Staff Night BBQ. We have an outstanding staff at this school and when students see school staff and parents working together to support their academic progress, only good things can happen! Thank you again for our volunteers from the school council and returning graduates for making our BBQ a success.

At Saint Gabriel we use Twitter as one of the forms of communication that allow us to connect the many households in our community. Many of our teachers have twitter accounts too. Twitter allows us to model a positive use of social media while we show the great things that are happening here at the school. We invite you to follow us in real time as we post good news, new learning and school updates both on Twitter and our school website.

As the season of thanks is upon us, it is a time to reflect on how blessed we truly are. With all the “busy-ness” in our lives, it is important that we remember that God’s love and presence is evident around us. The changing seasons, the brilliant sunshine, the vivid hues we see in the tree leaves, the falling rain, the laughter and play of children… are all examples of God’s hand at work. Let us be thankful for all the Lord has given us and not take it for granted.

On behalf of the staff, we would like to extend a happy and blessed Thanksgiving to each member of our school community.

Philip Bruni    &     Erin Stevens
